Episode 50 Shon Ellerby

I have the pleasure of interviewing a wonderful professional. A legal powerhouse with as much real world experience in the courtroom as outside. Her name is Shon Ellerby. Shon is running for Circuit court judge for Jackson, George, and Greene Counties.

Shon is a Mississippi native. The daughter of a Mississippi family as well, she was taught the principles of servitude from her father. Her father is a military veteran who spent much time in Virginia. As a result, when it came time to college, she attended the University of Virginia where she earned her Bachelors. Next, she attended the Regent University School of Law. While at Regent University she was involved in the Regent Moot Court Board. She also served and made contributions to the Regent Journal of International Law. Finally, she served as a mid-atlantic regional chair for the National Black Law Students Association.

Upon completing the Bar and earning her licensure as an attorney, Shon  served the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia as a member of the Community Prosecution Center team and served in the drug courts and mental health courts.

Love would bring Shon back to Mississippi–A love for home and her husband. Shon returned to South Mississippi where she would serve as an Assistant District Attorney for the Office of the District Attorney for the Nineteenth District, encompassing Jackson, George and Greene counties. Before joining the district attorney’s Office, Ellerby was a sole practitioner at Ellerby Law, LLC in Moss Point and also served as the City Prosecutor for the City of Moss Point.

Shon has also served as a member of the Mississippi Prosecutors Association and served on the Board of Directors, the Legislative Committee, the Curriculum Committee (Chair) and the Restoration of Rights Committee.

I’m always taken back by those brave souls who venture out from home and take on the complexities of the world. They become hardened by the challenges that are just outside the gates of home. Doing so, they gain experiences and skills home cannot teach them. They are hardened. Yet, like all heroes, they feel the need to return home. In doing so, they return experienced and ready to take on the dangers which have yet to confront their home, but are on their way. The heros emerge as ready for the danger–ready to protect their homeland. They stand resolute and with resolve. This is what I get from Shon Ellerby.

Shon and I have a wonderful chat about her experience–what she learned in Virginia, and what she can leverage in those experiences for South Mississippi.
